Grand Canyon dropped a tough 70-65 decision to Kansas City tonight at the Municipal Auditorium in Kansas City, Mo.
The loss dropped the Antelopes to 16-14 overall, 7-6 in the Western Athletic Conference. Kansas City improved to 13-17, 8-5 in the conference.
The second half was a back-and-forth affair that saw seven lead changes and seven tie scores.
GCU at one point held a nine-point lead, 31-22, with 18:49 left in the second half. UMKC pulled within two on a pair of occasions and tied the score at 42 with just over 10 minutes left. A driving layup by
Sam Daly, a
Ryan Majerle three and a Daly free throw gave the Lopes their final lead of the night at 57-55 with 4:01 on the clock.
Trailing by two, Majerle missed a 3-pointer, but
Joshua Braun grabbed the rebound and layed the ball in to tie the game at 59. The Roos would then parade to the line where they converted on 11 free throws in the final four minutes to earn the win.
Kansas City scored 50 points in the second half to outscore GCU 50-38, with 25 coming from the charity stripe. The Roos were also a plus-8 in second half rebound margin to edge the Lopes 33-31 for the night.
For the second-straight game, GCU lost when outshooting their opponent (40.4 to 37.3) and are now 14-3 when doing so. It was also the fourth time this season (against 12 wins) that the Lopes lost when leading at the half.
DeWayne Russell's 15 points led the Lopes, while Majerle had 13 and Braun 11.
Daniel Alexander had a team-high seven rebounds.
GCU trailed for almost the first 15 minutes of the opening half, taking their first lead at 21-20 on a pair of Royce Woolridge free throws with 5:22 left. The Lopes closed out the half on a 12-0 run to take a 27-20 lead into the break, holding the Roos scoreless over the final 7:43. GCU shot just 39.1 percent (9-for-23), but held UMKC to 25.9 percent (7-for-27).
Grand Canyon now returns home where they will wrap up their regular season with a game against Seattle on March 7. Tip at GCU Arena is scheduled for 7 p.m. (AZ time). The game can be watched on KAZT7 or online at
