The Grand Canyon men's basketball team faces their biggest test to date in the 2015-16 season as they host the Hampton Pirates on Monday, Nov. 30 at 7 p.m. at Grand Canyon University Arena. The Lopes are looking to win their fifth straight and start the season 5-0 for the first time since the 1995-96 season, but will be going up against a Hampton team that won the Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference (MEAC) title a year ago and qualified for the NCAA Tournament where the lost in the second round to Kentucky.
The Pirates come to Phoenix on the second leg of a tough nine-game stretch of road games. Hampton dropped the opening game of their road trip to William & Mary on Wednesday, Nov. 25, 86-67. The Pirates were without guard Quinton Chievous who currently leads the Pirates in scoring (15.0 ppg) and rebounding (14.3 rpg). Coming off last season's conference championship, Hampton and head coach Edward Joyner, Jr. were picked to finish second in the MEAC this season. It will be the first-ever matchup between the two schools.
Monday's matchup with Hampton kicks off a challenging week of basketball for the Lopes as they host head coach Dan Majerle's alma mater, Central Michigan, on Thursday, Dec. 3. The Chippewa's were 23-9 a year ago, including a 79-77 win over the Lopes in Mount Pleasant, Mich. Two days later, Grand Canyon will pack up for their first road trip of the season, traveling to Louisville.
"I told [our players], 'The honeymoon is over,'" Majerle said after Grand Canyon's win over Mississippi Valley State last Monday. "We've got Hampton, who was in the tournament. We've got Central Michigan who won 20-plus games and beat us there last year and has a lot of guys returning who are really good. Then we go to Louisville, and then we've got Southern, who just got two big wins. We're going to have to play really well to keep the winning streak alive and take one game at a time, but it's going to start with Hampton. They're very good."
Grand Canyon got off to a hot start in their most recent game, scoring the first 17 points of their matchup with Mississippi Valley State. They opened up that lead in the second half to cruise to a 94-60 win. Grandy Glaze and DeWayne Russell each recorded double-doubles as Glaze shot 9-of-10 from the field , scoring 18 points and grabbing 10 rebounds and Russell scored 11 points and dished out 12 assists. Joshua Braun led the Lopes in scoring with 22 points on 8-for-11 shooting from the field, including 3-of-5 from 3-point range.
"I'm glad we came out on a terrific 17-0 run," Majerle said. "We kind of let up and let them into it but in the second half came out with another 17-0 run. A really good win for our guys. I thought we played hard for the most part and did really well."
The Lopes' 94 points was their highest offensive output since transitioning to Division I in the 2013-14 season. They twice scored 91 points in the 2013-14 season, most recently vs. UT-Pan American on Jan. 2, 2014 when GCU won a high-scoring matchup 91-85 at GCU Arena. That wasn't the only milestone of the game. The 34-point margin of victory was the school's largest since defeating Academy of the Arts by 37 on Nov. 28, 2008. It was the second consecutive game this season that the Lopes have won by 30-plus points.
