OREM, Utah – Racing in the 5k event at the Western Athletic Conference Championships, the Grand Canyon University women's cross country team placed fifth Saturday. The meet was hosted by Utah Valley at Lakeside Park.
The host team led the race. Utah Valley is currently ranked 14
th in the USTFCCA Regional Rankings. UMKC placed second, while Seattle U finished third.
"We had a pretty good day," said head coach Sara Slattery. Â "I thought our teams could have run a few places higher but I am very happy with their improvement this season and how they have been running."
The Lopes were led by redshirt-junior
Emily Wilkinson who placed 11
th with a time of 18:36.24. Her placement earned her selection on Second Team All-WAC and it was her first time leading the team this season.
Senior
Rebekah Young placed second for the team—her highest this season—at 17
th with a time of 18:57.80. Fellow senior
Kelsi Klotter finished 19
th (19:00.78), while junior
Anna Henry was 28
th (19:22.43). Rounding out the Lopes top-five was senior
Kendra Altman at 30
th with a time of 19:25.56.
"Emily really stepped up today and was our top finisher," said Slattery. "Kelsi had an off day but still ran better than last year. Bekka, Anna, Kendra,
Lacey Peterson, and
Natalie Cardwell all ran smart tough races and improved from last year."
"I am proud of our runners and look forward to seeing them improve this track season!" concluded Slattery.Â
