DENVER – The Western Athletic Conference announced the men's and women's cross country pre-championship coaches' polls today, before the conference championship meet on Saturday, Oct. 31 in Orem, Utah. The Grand Canyon University women's cross country team was selected to finish third with 36 points and one first place vote. The men's squad was chosen to finish fifth with 17 points.
Utah Valley will host the conference meet at Lakeside Park with the men's 8k beginning at 8 a.m. and the women's 5k at 9 a.m.
Utah Valley was selected to finish first in both events, being awarded six first place votes and 36 points for the men's race and five first place votes and 47 points in the women's race. Rounding out the top-three for the men's 8k, Kansas City was chosen second and Seattle U was selected third. Seattle U was picked second out of the women's squads.
The men's team at Utah Valley is currently ranked ninth in the USTFCCA Regional Rankings, while the women are ranked 14
th. New Mexico State is also featured in the men's rankings at 15
th.
So far this season, the Grand Canyon men's squad has been led by redshirt-sophomore
Samuel Proctor in four meets, while the women's squad has been led by senior
Kelsi Klotter.
Last season, both GCU teams finished fifth in the WAC Championships under the guidance of then-head coach Michael Hoffmann.
