PHOENIX – Midnight struck on Saturday, Oct. 10, and havoc reigned over GCU Arena as Grand Canyon University got its first look at the men's and women's basketball teams. Over 7,000 fans piled into the arena to welcome its Antelopes for the 2015-16 season.
"The student support was more than I ever could've expected and I've been here for two of them and this year surpassed them all," men's head coach Dan Majerle said. "To have that many students show up with that kind of energy and vibe was just a great way to kick off our season. I think that this is a place that really can be one of the true home court advantages in college basketball."
Students began lining up around 9 p.m. Friday night waiting to cheer on their fellow student-athletes for the start of the 2015-16 season. The Stars Wars theme placed fans 'In a Galaxy Far Far Away' and the men's and women's basketball team were able to put on a show that featured a lot of three-pointers, some athletic dunks and some dance moves by players and coaches.
"It was phenomenal for not only our fans but our band and cheer and dance team as well," women's head coach Trent May said. "We have such amazing leadership and it's a testament to what we believe here at GCU. It is a great night for GCU Athletics and the university itself."
The crowd erupted when Majerle and May repelled from the ceiling during introductions, greeted by their teams at half court.
All eyes are now set on the start of the season as the GCU begins the season with a doubleheader on Nov. 13 against Portland State for the men and Hawaii for the women at GCU Arena.
"Midnight Madness is a chance to witness at first-hand what Grand Canyon University is all about," May said. "All that momentum that was created at midnight is going to carry over into our season."
