The Grand Canyon University sand volleyball team is preparing for their 2015 season under the direction of first-year head coach Jose Lugo. This will mark the third season since the team's formation in 2013.
They will open their slate with a home match on March 8 against LSU and New Mexico, before heading to Chula Vista, Calif., March 14-15 for the first of their collegiate tournaments hosted by the USVA.
"The schedule is a really tough schedule," said Lugo. "We're going to open it up by hosting LSU and New Mexico to start our season. Then we are going to be going to one of the two USA Volleyball collegiate tournaments. They host those twice a year every year and we're going to compete in both. We'll see Pepperdine, Long Beach State, and Loyola Marymount there. The level of competition is really high at these tournaments."
GCU will then travel to Albuquerque, N.M., to face the Lobos in their inaugural season of sand volleyball on March 21.
At the end of March, the Lopes will have a four match home stand beginning on March 25 against Boise State. After that they will face Nebraska on March 26 before going head-to-head with Southern California on March 27 and 28. San Jose State will also be joining the fray on the 28
th.
"We're running the gauntlet in March by hosting Boise State, Nebraska, and USC," Lugo said. "That was done with the idea that if we get to play at the national tournament we would have to compete against strong opponents and get a high level of competition in over the course of a few days."
"We're excited about our season and our home matches," explained Lugo. "The USC match on March 27 is after the men's volleyball match, so what we're trying to do is get some of the crowd to come out after that and create an exciting evening of volleyball for fans to come out to. We want to build a great atmosphere for fans to have a fun time while watching some great competition."
In April, the team will head out to California to face Long Beach State on the 10
th. Beginning on April 11, they will compete in their second two-day collegiate tournament hosted by the USVA in Hermosa Beach, Calif.
Grand Canyon will close out the regular season in Hawai'i with a tournament on April 18 and matches against Hawai'i and San Jose State on April 19.
USC, Hawai'i, and Long Beach State were each ranked in the AVCA's top-10 throughout the season last year, marking them as strong opponents in the emerging sport.
