Monterroso Earns WAC Offensive Player of the Week Honor

Sophomore forward scored a pair of goals in Friday’s win over Idaho

Grand Canyon University sophomore forward Maria Monterroso has been named the Western Athletic Conference Offensive Player of the Week for Sept. 14-21, as announced by the conference office.

Monterroso, a native of Guatemala City, Guatemala, scored her fourth and fifth goals of the season to help Grand Canyon to a 2-1 win over Idaho on Friday. Monterroso tied the game at 1-1 in the 78th minute and then scored the go-ahead goal for GCU in the 85th minute to secure the victory. In the contest, she fired six shots, with four of those being on goal to lead the Canyon offensive attack. She ranks second in the WAC in goals per game (0.71) and is tied for third in the conference with five goals on the season.

The Lopes will open WAC play on Saturday when they host Bakersfield at GCU Soccer Field. Kickoff is slated for 7 p.m. and fans unable to make it out can follow the action via links for live video and live stats at www.gculopes.com.
