Grand Canyon rallied from a 2-0 deficit to win the third set, but weren't able to force a fifth in a 3-1 (25-10, 25-21, 28-30, 24-26) loss to Southern Utah (7-3) in the regular-season home opener at GCU Arena Wednesday.
After 13 ties and five lead changes, Grand Canyon (7-3) got nine third-set kills from
Shannon Dugan to cut the Thunderbirds lead to 2-1. The Antelopes trailed by as much as six in the set and staved off four match points. Dugan's ninth kill of the set was the final point. The senior from Gardnerville, Nev., had a match-best 22 kills and hit .263 (22-7-57). She hit .400 in the third (9-1-20) and was one of two Lopes to record a double-double. She added 10 digs, while, off the bench, setter
Michelle Steagall had 28 assists and 12 digs.
On a block from
Hannah Hankins and
Maddy Underwood, GCU had set point in the fourth at 24-23, but the Thunderbirds were able to record the final three points of the match.
Senior libero
Mackenzie Phelps had a match-best 28 digs. Senior
Hayleigh Friemoth had 16.
Hannah Hicks led GCU in blocks with three.
Southern Utah had more kills (60-50) and hit for a better percentage (.226-.086). The Thunderbirds edged the Antelopes in digs (88-87) and had more blocks (12-6) and service aces (5-1).

Randahl Powers came off the bench to add eight kills.
The Antelopes head to Chicago for four matches over the weekend. The trip opens with the Western Athletic Conference opener at Chicago State 8 a.m. (Arizona Time) Friday. The Antelopes take on UMass-Lowell at 1 p.m. On Saturday, GCU opens the day with an 8 a.m. contest with San Jose State and wrap up the weekend with a 1 p.m. match against South Dakota State.
