Starter
Andrew Naderer tossed his first complete game of the season, allowing just a run on seven hits and three walks with seven strikeouts. It was the seventh time this season that Naderer has allowed three or fewer runs while tossing at least 7.0 innings. It was the fourth straight win for Naderer, who improved to 8-3 on the season.
"This one was all Andrew Naderer," said head coach Andy Stankiewicz. "After he took a line drive to his midsection early, he really gutted it out. He even had the poise to still make the play. Andrew did a great job of getting the leadoff outs, and that allowed us to get in some double play situations and get out of innings."
"North Dakota is a tough team," added Stankiewicz. "They are playing for a chance to get to the tournament, so we have to make sure that we are ready to go."
As a team, GCU combined for their 20
th double-digit hitting effort of the season with 12 hits in the game.
Chad De La Guerra and
Michael Pomeroy kept their respective hitting streaks alive, extending them to 16 and 11 games, respectively. De La Guerra collected three hits, while Pomeroy went 2-for-5 with a team-best two RBI.
Ben Mauseth had a career-best three hits and
Paul Panaccione added two for GCU.
After trading scoreless frames to open the game, GCU got on the board in the top of the third after Panaccione and De La Guerra collected back-to-back singles.
Josh Meyer moved them to second and third with a sacrifice bunt and both crossed home plate a single through the right side off the bat of Pomeroy.
UND got on the board in the bottom of the fifth after putting runners on first and third and just one out. A slow roller to Mauseth at third allowed that run to come across although GCU's defense turned an unconventional double play to put an end to the frame.
The Lopes got that run back in the next inning on a
Brandon Smith sacrifice fly to right field that plated Mauseth, who opened the frame with a triple to right-centerfield. GCU loaded the bases one out later, but a groundout to first ended the threat.
After GCU threatened again in the seventh but did not score, Naderer pitched out of a jam with runners on second and third in the bottom half to keep the two-run lead intact. Neither pitcher allowed a run to score as Naderer ended the game with a double-play in the ninth for the complete game victory.
