After defeating CSU Bakersfield (10-30-1, 1-5 WAC) on Friday afternoon in the series opener, the Grand Canyon University (19-17, 4-2 WAC) softball team split with the Roadrunners on Saturday. The Antelopes dropped a one-run contest in game one, 5-4, before bouncing back with a 4-1 win in Saturday's second game at the Roadrunner Softball Complex in Bakersfield, Calif.
"I was happy to get game two today, we can't leave as many runners on as we did and that really hurt us," said head coach Ann Pierson.
Game OneA four-run second inning propelled the 'Runners to an early 4-0 lead in game one. Those four runs came off of Canyon hurler
Taylor Nowlin, who got the start in Saturday's midday affair.
Kiki Sepulveda took over in the circle in the third and despite being tagged with the loss was very sharp for the Lopes, as the senior didn't allow an earned run in four innings of relief work.
"Taylor wasn't sharp in game one but Kiki did a great job and I was very pleased with her performance in relief," said Pierson.
The Lopes were held in check through the first three innings by CSUB ace Kelsie Monroe, who leads the league in several statistical categories, before striking twice in the top of the fourth to cut the Bakersfield deficit to 4-2. GCU opened the frame with back-to-back singles off the bats of
Kelsey Barak and
Lauren Regester.
Camree Wartman then reached and advanced to second on a CSUB throwing error, which allowed both Barak and Regester to come around and score with just one out. Monroe was able to get out of the inning without further damage, recording a strikeout and groundout, stranding Wartman at second.
The Lopes replicated their fourth inning performance, plating two more runs in the fifth to knot the game at 4-4.
Haley Walker, who reached on a fielder's choice, scored on a Barak sacrifice fly for Canyon's third run.
Kayla Henry, who also reached on a fielder's choice earlier in the inning, capitalized on a Bakersfield fielding error and scored to even the score at 4-4.
After CSUB scratched across a run in the bottom of the fifth, GCU was unable to string together a rally and fell in game one, 5-4.
Barak and Regester both finished with two hits at the plate in game one.
Game TwoAfter dropping game one, the Lopes bounced back with a 4-1 win over the 'Runners in game two.
Kelsey Barak belted a two-run homer in the top of the third to give GCU an early 2-0 lead. The Canyon shortstop has connected on six round-trippers this spring. Barak's bomb also scored Haley Walker, who has accounted for the second-most runs scored in the conference. Walker reached earlier in the frame when she was hit by a pitch.
CSUB answered with a solo home run of its own in the home half of the third, cutting the Grand Canyon lead to 2-1.
The Lopes tallied another run in the top of the fifth on a Camree Wartman RBI single, scoring Barak who had reached on a fielder's choice earlier in the inning to extend the Canyon lead to 3-1.
GCU added an insurance run in the sixth when Lauren Regester blasted her second home run of the season, a solo shot to left, advancing the lead to 4-1.
Stephanie Pesqueira put the 'Runners down 1-2-3 in the bottom of the seventh to secure the win. The senior right-hander had another great outing, throwing a complete game four-hitter. The Tempe native has compiled a 10-7 record this season in the circle and hasn't suffered a loss in her last seven starts.
"Peski threw a good game, kept them off balance and mixed her speeds well," added Pierson. "Our defense was very solid and Kayla Henry made a couple of game-changing plays in the outfield."
Wartman and Regester both went 2-for-4 from the dish in game two to lead the Lopes.
"We will get back to work this week and sharpen up some things in preparation for our trip up to Utah Valley next weekend," concluded Pierson.
The Lopes will continue WAC play on the road again next weekend, as they will travel to Orem, Utah for a three-game series with Utah Valley (11-22, 4-2 WAC). The two foes will open up the series on Friday with a 1 p.m. (Arizona Time) contest, followed by a doubleheader on Saturday afternoon to conclude the weekend series.
