"It starts with starting pitching and Andrew (Naderer) did a great job today," said head coach Andy Stankiewicz. "Today's start looked like yesterday's where we had a runner on third with no outs and couldn't get him across home plate. Sometimes you can get frustrated with that, but Andrew really picked us up early today. We needed someone to give us seven or eight innings and that is exactly what he did."
A couple of GCU players established career-highs in the game, including
Josh Meyer with four RBI and
Chad De La Guerra with four runs scored. De La Guerra went 3-for-4 at the plate and fell just a single shy of hitting for the cycle. Meyer collected a career-high tying two hits for the seventh time.
"Chad has been swinging the bat well, and hopefully when a guy is going that well, you can get him to the plate with runners on base so his hits can produce runs," Stankiewicz said. "He has probably been our most consistent hitter since day one. He has done a great job and he put together great at-bats today."
"Josh is swinging the bat better," added Stankiewicz. "He has been doing a lot of early work with Coach Ryan Cisterna and is starting to shorten up his swing. It's a good problem to have with two catchers who are swinging the bat well. As a coach, I have to figure out how to get them at-bats, but it is nice to have a good tandem between Josh and Humberto (Aranda)."
David Walker also had three hits in the game, while
Jon Kealoha,
Michael Pomeroy,
Brandon Smith, and
Ben Mauseth added two hits. De La Guerra plated two runs.
As a team, the Lopes collected a season-best three triples and seven extra-base hits.
Andrew Naderer established a new season-high with eight strikeouts while improving to 5-3 on the season. He allowed five runs (four earned) on 11 hits and a walk over 7.2 innings of work.
Scott Serigstad tossed 1.1 scoreless innings of relief.
Similar to yesterday's contest, Walker opened the game with a leadoff extra-base hit, this time a triple to left-centerfield, but Northern Colorado starter Josh Tinnon retired the next three batters to keep the Lopes off the board.
GCU broke the scoreless tie in the third on Kealoha's double down the right field line to plate
Josh Ethier, who reached with an inning opening walk and was moved to second on Walker's team-leading 10
th sacrifice bunt. Kealoha came around to score one batter later on De La Guerra's fourth triple of the year to make it 2-0 in favor of the Lopes with just one out on the board.
Meyer plated De La Guerra with a single through the left side and crossed home on an RBI single down the left field line off the bat of Smith to put the Lopes ahead 4-0 before the frame was over.
De La Guerra picked up his second RBI of the game with his second homer of the season, this time putting a 1-1 pitch over the right-centerfield fence to build GCU's lead to 5-0 in the fifth.
Garrett Jeffries' double up the middle scored Pomeroy, while Mauseth plated Smith with the seventh run of the game.
The Bears got on the board in the fifth after a leadoff single came around to score on an error.
The Lopes got two runs back in the sixth after Meyer picked up a pair of RBI on a single to left field that plated Kealoha and De La Guerra to make it a 9-1 game.
Northern Colorado scored their second run in the sixth inning, again when the leadoff man reached with a single and came around to score two batters later.
GCU scored twice in the eighth inning to make it 11-2 as Meyer plated Walker with a sacrifice fly to centerfield, while Pomeroy drove home De La Guerra with a single up the middle. The Bears tacked on three runs in the bottom half of the frame to pull within 11-5.
Walker's single to shortstop scored Mauseth with the 12
th run of the game in the top of the ninth.
