The Nevada baseball team (13-13, 6-6 MWC) used a two-out rally in the bottom of the ninth inning to come away with a 3-2 walkoff victory over Grand Canyon University (15-12, 5-1 WAC) today in the series finale at Peccole Park in Reno, Nev. The loss snapped a season-best five-game win streak for the Antelopes.
GCU outhit the Wolf Pack 9-6 but stranded seven runners, including one apiece in the seventh and ninth innings and three in the opening frame.
"We missed some opportunities early," said head coach Andy Stankiewicz. "Specifically the situation in the first inning where we had a chance to do some damage with the bases loaded. We didn't take advantage of that. We have to get more than one run in that situation. Overall today, I thought we played good defense, but we have to pitch better. We gave away too many free bases today, and our guys know that. It's not who we are. But getting four out of five games in five days, we will take it. Now we will head out to UTPA and get ready for our WAC series this weekend."
David Walker went 3-for-4 with a run scored to lead the Lopes offense, while
Paul Panaccione plated both of GCU's runs in the game.
Zebastian Valenzuela made his first career start for GCU, allowing two runs on two hits in 2.2 innings.
Malcolm Purdy (4.0) and
Joey Wise (0.2) combined for 4.2 scoreless innings of relief, allowing just two hits in that time.
Trent Wilson was tagged with his first loss of the season after surrendering the winning run in the ninth inning.
Walker opened the game with his second triple of the season and scored on Panaccione's fielder's choice to jump out to the early 1-0 lead. GCU had the bases loaded with one out in the inning, but Nevada got back-to-back strikeouts to end the threat.
One inning later, Panaccione plated the second run of the game, this time scoring
Seth Fretheim who singled to begin the second inning.
Nevada knotted the score at two after drawing back-to-back walks to open the third inning. The runs came around to score on a groundout and single before the frame was over.
The teams put up zeroes over the next 5.0 frames and looked to head into extra-inning as Wilson had two outs on the board with a runner on first in the bottom of the ninth. However, Nevada collected back-to-back singles to score the game-winning run.
GCU returns to Western Athletic Conference play this weekend when they travel to Edinburg, Tex., to take on Texas-Pan American for a three-game series beginning at 5 p.m. (Arizona time) on Friday. Fans can follow the action live by tuning in to Independent Talk 1100 AM KFNX (online at
