One day after losing in a hard-fought three-setter in the deciding match against No. 7 Nebraska, Grand Canyon's No. 3 pair of
Kami Dickerson and
Chloe Jenkins won in three sets to give the Antelopes (6-3) a 3-2 win over visiting Arizona (5-3) Friday.
After dropping the first set 13-21, Dickerson/Jenkins swept the final two sets over U of A's Ronni Lewis and Taylor Arizobal 21-17, 15-11.
"We went home last night disappointed. I give the girls a lot of credit of coming out with a new mentality to start a new day," said GCU coach Kris Naber, whose club lost 3-2 to Arizona earlier in the season. "They did a good job with the things we did well yesterday and a better job on making changes to the things we didn't do well.
"What made it better was to see the deciding match come down to the same group and same situation. That was the biggest change today."
Playing together for the first time other than in practice,
Kaylee Dombroski and
Brooke Razo made up the GCU No. 4 pair. They came away with a 21-9, 15-21, 15-13 win. They were down 13-10 in the third set.
"They out-work their opponents in practice and I felt they earned that spot," said Naber. "I felt we needed to get a win at No. 4/No.5. (Dombroski/Razo) played with great composure and energy today."
In the other GCU win, the No. 1 team of
Mackenzie Phelps and
Kelli Dallmann improved to a team-best 9-2 with a 21-11, 21-16 victory over McKenna Witt and Madison Witt.
Along with Nebraska, the teams began a single-elimination pairs tournament. GCU's Phelps/Dallmann received a first-round bye. Dugan/Glennie defeated Arizona's Emily Kiser/Allie Cooke 21-14, 21-18 to advance to Saturday's quarterfinals.
The two GCU pairs are the only Antelopes remaining. Arizona and Nebraska each have three teams still competing. Quarterfinal action begins at 10 a.m. Saturday.
