The Grand Canyon University women's soccer team was recognized Monday by the National Soccer Coaches Association of America (NSCAA) for its outstanding efforts in the classroom. Under the direction of Stevie Gill—the 2014 WAC Coach of the Year—the Antelopes boasted an impressive 3.50 team GPA for the 2013-14 academic year, qualifying them for the NSCAA Team Academic Award.
To be eligible for the award, teams must have a minimum grade point average of 3.0 for the entire academic year. This is the second consecutive year that GCU has received the team accolade.
"In order to build a TOP program, it is imperative that we do everything we can to help our student-athletes in the classroom, on the field and in the community," said Gill. "Being a former professional educator, academics are a cornerstone of our Women's Soccer Program here at GCU as we want to develop well-rounded individuals that go out into the world and do special things. Most of our student-athletes will be professionals in something other than soccer, so it is critical that we focus our efforts on supporting our athletes in the classroom as this will pay the greatest dividends."
Grand Canyon finished the 2014 campaign tied for third in the WAC regular season standings after winning seven of its final eight games.
