The Arizona Diamondbacks today announced that the Grand Canyon University baseball team will participate as part of their annual Collegiate Baseball Series, set to begin in 2015. The D-backs will host GCU, Arizona State, and the University of Arizona in an exhibition game each season for the next six years, rotating between the programs, beginning with the Sun Devils on March 3, 2015.
GCU is slated to play the D-backs in 2017 and 2020.
GCU head coach Andy Stankiewicz and former player Cody Ransom are both D-backs alums. Stankiewicz played for Arizona during their inaugural season in 1998 and has been featured on numerous Fox Sports Arizona pre- and postgame shows. Additionally, he has been a regular participant of the annual Alumni Game.
"The GCU baseball program is very excited to announce a partnership with the Arizona Diamondbacks," said Stankiewicz. "They are a class organization that always does everything with excellence"
"We believe the two-game exhibition series in spring of 2017 and 2020 will be a great experience for all of Grand Canyon University," Stankiewicz added. "We also feel this six-game series with GCU, ASU, and UA will bring great exposure and baseball to the state of Arizona."
The Antelopes, alongside with ASU and UA, bring a decorated baseball history to the exhibition games at Salt River Fields. The Lopes won four NAIA Baseball World Series Championships, while ASU and UA have combined for nine NCAA Division I national titles.
GCU's 2015 season begins on Feb. 7 with the annual Alumni Game. The regular season opens with the GCU Classic from Feb. 13-15 at Brazell Stadium. Click
