Grand Canyon University head men's basketball coach Dan Majerle today announced that Demetrius Walker has signed an Athletic Scholarship Agreement for the 2013-14 season.
Walker joins
Jeremy Adams,
Josh Braun,
Miroslav Jaksic and
Akachi Okugo as additions to Majerle's first incoming class, who will compete in their inaugural season as part of the Division I Western Athletic Conference.
Walker, a 6-2 guard from Fontana, Calif., played the last three seasons with the University of New Mexico. He also played a season at Arizona State University and attended St. Mary's High School in Phoenix.
"We are excited to have a player of Demetrius' ability that has played at both New Mexico and Arizona State," said Majerle. "It is good to have him here at GCU, as he brings with him a lot of experience and can score the basketball. He will be big for our team next season having a guy that we can go to. "
At New Mexico, Walker averaged 5.0 points and 15.4 minutes per game as a junior last season. He played in 23 games, making four starts. Walker played in 35 games (one start) as a sophomore, averaging 7.4 points and 16.8 minutes per game. That season, he scored 19 points in the Lobos' 79-64 win over Air Force in the Mountain West Tournament Quarterfinals. That squad won the Mountain West Conference Championship and advanced to the Second Round of NCAA Tournament. Walker scored 16 points off the bench in the NCAA First Round win over Long Beach State.
Walker played for ASU in 23 games as a freshman, leading the team in scoring in three contests. He scored a season-high 15 points on Feb. 6 at Washington.
Walker led St. Mary's to the Arizona 5A State Championship, scoring 27 points in the title game against Gilbert Highland. He was ranked No. 115 in the Rivals.com final national recruiting list after his senior season and was also listed as No. 25 for shooting guards.
Walker graduated from New Mexico in May of 2013 and will pursue his graduate degree at Grand Canyon.
