For the third time in the last four years, Grand Canyon, ranked No. 17 in the National Fastpitch Coaches Association Division II Softball Poll, has qualified for the NCAA Division II Softball Championships.
Announced this morning on the NCAA Selection Show, Grand Canyon (39-17) is the No. 4 seed in the West Region and will travel to top-seed Humboldt State (46-12), in Arcata, Calif., this weekend. The Antelopes open with No. 5 seed Saint Martin’s (39-14), the champion of the Great Northwest Athletic Conference at 1:30 p.m. Friday.
“We’re happy to be considered and to get a region bid,” said GCU coach Ann Pierson. “We learned a lot last weekend at Dixie State and we have to apply it this week. The season starts over again.”
UC San Diego (33-22) is the tournament’s No. 8 seed and will join GCU, Saint Martin’s and host Humboldt State in the West Region I tournament. Dixie State (37-12) is the No. 2 seed and will host the West Region II tournament. No. 3 Sonoma State (36-19), No. 6 CSU Dominguez Hills (34-21) and No. 7 Hawai’i Hilo (39-17) will also play in St. George, Utah.
The two West Region winners will play in the Super Regional the following weekend.
