Similar to last night, GCU started their scoring early and drove Sonoma State starter Glenn Wallace, who entering the contest had the third-lowest ERA in the country (1.06), out of the game after just 5.0 innings.
GCU starter
Jorge Perez tossed his second complete game of the season, allowing just 2 runs on 6 hits and 2 walks with 5 strikeouts in 9.0 innings of work. Perez retired the first eight batters he faced before allowing a single to centerfield with two outs in the third inning.
Offensively, the ‘Lopes were led by
Brian Kraft,
Steven Swingle, and
Brandon Smith with two hits apiece. Five different GCU batters collected an RBI in the game.
For the second straight night, GCU got on the board first after Kraft led off the bottom of the first with a double to left center. Kraft moved to second on a groundout by
Paul Panaccione and crossed home plate on a sacrifice fly to right field off the bat of
Michael Pomeroy.
The ‘Lopes scored again in the second inning on a
Chris Lindmark RBI double to plate Smith with one out on the board.
Kyle Raidy then reached on a single to right field, moving Lindmark to third. Raidy stole second and forced an errant throw by the Seawolves catcher into centerfield, allowing Lindmark to score and hand the ‘Lopes a 3-0 lead.
Pomeroy made a nice defensive play in the top of the third inning, but was forced to exit the game and give way to pinch-hitter
Charles Wagner.
For the third straight inning, the ‘Lopes scored, this time plating two runs on an RBI double off the bat of
Derek Mendoza and RBI single from Smith, who was eventually caught in a rundown to end the frame.
The Seawolves plated their first run in the fifth inning on a sacrifice fly to centerfield after putting runners on first and third with one out.
Wagner then proceeded to place a 2-0 pitch over the left field fence to lead off the fifth inning and answer Sonoma State’s run, his first long ball of the season.
After both teams put up zeroes in the sixth, Sonoma State opened the seventh with consecutive hits to put runners on second and third with no one out. Another sacrifice fly made it a 6-2 ballgame, but that was the only run the Seawolves would plate as Perez pitched around those early baserunners. Perez again pitched his way out of a jam, inducing a fly out with two outs and a runner on second in the eighth.
Neither team would score for the remainder of the contest as Perez retired his final four batters.
