The annual Pacific West All-Conference and Daktronics West Region Baseball Teams were announced today, and Grand Canyon University was well-represented with five All-Conference nods and a First Team All-Region selection that now becomes eligible for All-America consideration.
The National Collegiate Baseball Writers Association also announced their 2013 NCAA Division II All-West Region Teams, based upon players nominated for First or Second Team in their respective conference. GCU had four players earn Honorable Mention accolades.
Head coach Andy Stankiewicz was named PacWest Conference Coach of the Year after guiding the Antelopes to their first conference crown, sharing that honor with California Baptist as both posted 26-10 records. Stankiewicz, in just his second year at the helm, guided the program to their most wins (34) and first postseason appearance since 2002. His squad posted an impressive 20-game win streak from March 8-April 6, the longest such streak since the 1984 team won a school-best 27 consecutive contests.
Freshman left-hander
Andrew Naderer was named Freshman of the Year after posting an 8-2 record and 2.62 ERA (22 ER in 75.2 IP) in 13 starts. He led the team in wins, complete games (4), and strikeouts (67) en route to also earning a spot on the Second Team All-Conference and NCBWA All-West Region Honorable Mention. Among conference pitchers, he ranks tied for second in wins, fourth in strikeouts, tied for fourth in complete games, eighth in innings pitched, and is one of just 13 PacWest pitchers with a complete game shutout on the season. Naderer had back-to-back complete games on April 19 and 27, allowing just 3 runs in 14.0 innings of work.
Junior catcher
Steven Swingle, sophomore right-hander
Coley Bruns, and freshman designated hitter
Garrett Jeffries garnered First Team All-Conference honors. Swingle owns a .323 batting average (54-for-167) with a team-best 20 extra-base hits and 18 multi-hit games, while his 33 RBI and seven multi-RBI games are second on the squad. Swingle posted an 11-game hitting streak this season, the second longest such streak on the team. He leads all conference hitters with seven triples on the season and ranks 10
th with 85 total bases. Swingle was also named to the NCBWA All-West Region Honorable Mention Team.
Bruns opened the season out of the bullpen for GCU, but quickly transitioned into a solid part of the starting rotation, going 7-1 with a 2.21 ERA (18 ER in 73.1 IP), the best mark among ‘Lopes starters. His .195 batting average against is tops in the conference as he was also chosen as an NCBWA Honorable Mention selection.
Jeffries is batting .350 (49-for-140) with nine doubles and 23 RBI, ranking 10
th among all conference hitters in batting average. He strung together a season-best 10-game hitting streak and reached base in 15 consecutive games, both of which are tied for third-longest for GCU and helped him achieve NCBWA Honorable Mention honors. Jeffries has also seen action on the mound for the ‘Lopes, and is 1-1 in five appearances in relief.
Senior outfielder
Harlyn Griffiths was named to the Third Team All-Conference after batting .352 (32-for-91) with two doubles, a triple, and a career-best 18 RBI. He has made 28 starts in the outfield for GCU this season, posting 10 multi-hit and five multi-RBI games.
Derek Mendoza was named to the Daktronics West Region First Team, making him eligible for All-America consideration, to be announced later this month. Mendoza leads the team in a number of offensive categories with a .359 batting average (56-for-156), 56 hits, 37 RBI, and a .431 on-base percentage. Additionally, he leads the squad with eight multi-RBI games and ranks third with 14 multi-hit games. Mendoza owns the longest hitting streak for GCU this season at 14 games and also reached base in 19 straight contests, the second-best stretch on the team. Among conference batters, he ranks fourth with three triples, seventh in batting average, eighth in RBI, and 10
th in on-base percentage. Off the field, Mendoza was recently tabbed as a Capital One Academic All-District First Team selection, as voted on by the Collegiate Sports Information Directors of America, also making him eligible for All-America consideration for that honor.
