No. 21 Grand Canyon (30-12) won its 30th game of the season, with a 5-0 victory over Northwest Nazarene, and dropped a 1-0 decision to San Francisco State to finish pool play 3-2 at the Tournament of Champions Presented by Mizuno in Turlock, Calif., Saturday.
GCU beat Northwest Nazarene behind the five-hit pitching of
Kiki Sepulveda (10-2).
Only two NNU runners reached second base and only three runners were left on. GCU turned one double play and catcher
Annie Jordan picked off a runner at second base to end the game.
Offensively, GCU got its runs early. The Antelopes scored one in the first, two in the second and another in the third. The final run came in the sixth.
Claire Zampini singled and stole second base and
Kelsey Barak followed with a double to give GCU a 1-0 lead. In the second,
Nicole Newbury,
Stephanie Smith and
Haley Walker hit consecutive singles. Newbury and Smith came in on a double from
Kayla Henry. In the third,
Lauren Regester reached second on an error and scored on a Newbury single. The final run came in when Walker singled, stole second and went to third on a wild pitch. She scored on a Barak ground out.
"Kiki threw great, the defense was strong and we were aggressive at the plate," said GCU coach Ann Pierson.
Against San Francisco State, the Antelopes left seven runners on base, while pitcher
Stephanie Pesqueira gave up just four hits in the team's one-run loss. The Gators had two of their four hits in their run-scoring third inning. GCU had three singles in the first, but were unable to score due to a double play. In the seventh, Newbury led off with a double, but was unable to score.
"Pesky threw great, too, and the defense played well, again," added Pierson. "We popped up five bunts and you can't make those kind of mistakes. We hit some balls hard and the effort was there, but we didn't take care of the little things."
GCU will compete in bracket play Sunday and will get a rematch with San Francisco State in the Bronze Bracket at 8:30 a.m.
