Grand Canyon has debuted at No. 2 in the initial NCAA West Region Softball Poll, released Wednesday.
The top eight teams in each of eight geographical regions advance to the NCAA Division II National Tournament, beginning with region tournaments May 10-12. The top two seeds in each region are eligible to be host schools for the region tournament, held at two sites.
GCU is in a tie for first place in the Pacific West Conference and is 36-12 overall and 19-5 in the PacWest. GCU is tied with Hawai’i and have a one-game lead over Dixie State.
GCU is one of five PacWest teams ranked in the Top 10. Dixie State is No. 5. Hawai’i Hilo comes in at No. 7. Hawai’i Pacific and Notre Dame de Namur are No. 9 and No. 10, respectively.
Humboldt State, out of the California Collegiate Athletic Association is No. 1, while the CCAA’s Sonoma State is ranked no. 3. The lone team from the Great Northwest Athletic Conference, Saint Martin’s is No. 4. CCAA teams CSU Dominguez Hills, at No. 6 and UC San Diego, at No. 8, round out the region poll.
GCU has eight games remaining in the regular season, all are on the road. The Antelopes have a pair of four-game series remaining. They will play doubleheaders April 26-27 at Azusa Pacific and May 3-4 at Dixie State. The winner of the Pacific West Conference gets an automatic bid into the region tournament. GCU has made the tournament twice (2010, 2012) as an at-large entrant.
This week’s ranking reflects the ballots of the regional advisory committees (RACs) of games played through April 14th. The Division II softball selection show, webcast at www.ncaa.com, will reveal the eight-team region tournament field along with the entire field of 64 on May 6 at 7:30 a.m. Arizona Time
