The Grand Canyon University cheer team has announced the team for the 2013-14 season after hosting tryouts this past weekend.
The tryouts consisted of a grueling two-day process where applicants were evaluated and judged on strength and conditioning, choreograph, tumbling, and stunting. Applicants were also interviewed and evaluated on character, presence, and personal recommendations.
“GCU Cheerleading has become a very competitive, well-known, and well-respected program,” said Director of Spirit Programs, Emily Stephens. “We have raised the bar and expectations each year to keep up with the exciting growth and competitiveness of GCU Athletics.”
Head cheer coach Erin Ditto could not be happier with the team that was chosen. “For our first season cheering on GCU at the Division I level, we are excited to say this will be our most talented team yet. They are all fine men and women who are ready to represent and be ambassadors for the university.”
Out of 50 applicants, a program-high for tryouts, 22 members were selected for the team, consisting of 13 females and nine males. The team will follow a set work-out regime during the summer and begin official practices on August 9.
