No. 13 Grand Canyon earned a doubleheader sweep of Dominican University of California at Stapleton-Pierson Field Saturday.
GCU won 16-2, in five innings, and 3-0 to extend its season and Pacific West Conference winning streak to six. The Antelopes are 18-5 overall and 6-0 in the PacWest. They have a one-game lead in the PacWest standings over Hawai’i-Hilo (16-12, 7-3). The Antelopes next games are in Hawai’i, opening with a doubleheader at Hilo March 14.
Saturday’s games started two hours late due heavy rains the night before. Head coach Ann Pierson was proud of her team, not just for getting two more wins, but helping get the field ready to play.
“They spent four hours getting the field ready with the university facilities team and without them we wouldn’t have been able to play,” said Pierson. “I’m grateful for how important is was to them to get these games in and we showed no fatigue on the field.”
After Dominican opened the first game with a run in the first, GCU answered with 10 of its own in the inning and four more in the second. GCU had 18 hits and benefitted from four Penguin errors.
Kelsey Barak had a two-run triple and RBI-single in the first inning and finished the game with three hits, three runs scored and four RBi.
Haley Walker had three hits, two runs and two RBIs.
Kayla Henry scored three times and had two hits.
Claire Zampini had a two-hit, two-RBI game.
Nicole Newbury and
Stephanie Smith each scored a pair of runs.
Stephanie Pesqueira and
Kailey Regester combined pitching gave up onl three hits, while striking out eight.
“We came out and swung the bats and Pesky and Kailey shut down their offense,” said Pierson. “Our offense was explosive.”
GCU had four extra-base hits. Walker and
Kiki Sepulveda each had doubles. Henry had a first-inning triple just two batters ahead of Barak’s three-base hit.
Henry extended her on-base streak to all 23 games when she went 1-for-3 in GCU’s 3-0 victory. Zampini had three hits in the game and was 5-for-8 on the day. All three Grand Canyon runs came in the fourth.
Regester, Pesqueira and Newbury all had singles, the latter two on bunts. Smith’s single up the middle plated the first run. Pesqueira scored on a Henry sac fly and Newbury came across on a wild pitch, advancing to third on a hit by Zampini.
Pesqueira went the distance to improve to 8-2. She struck out five and gave up only four hits. Newbury had two hits in the game.
“We weren’t complacent (after the first game). We battled and had good energy. We just hit balls right at them,” said Pierson. “We just didn’t get the timely hits like the first game. Give their pitcher credit for hitting their spots and keeping us off balance.”
