The Grand Canyon University baseball team evened the series with Point Loma after a 12-1 win tonight at Brazell Stadium. The game was called with one out in the bottom of the eighth inning due to inclement weather.
With the win, the Antelopes improved to 10-5 overall and 5-1 in the Pacific West Conference, while the Sea Lions fell to 8-9 overall and 6-4 in conference play.
“The guys did a good job of weathering tough conditions with no batting practice or infield before the game,” said head coach Andy Stankiewicz. “Sometimes that can affect you adversely, but the guys responded well and put some good at bats together early.”
Today was originally scheduled for two 7.0 inning games, but due to the poor weather, the start time was pushed back over an hour and the teams agreed to play one 9.0 inning game.
Andrew Naderer improved to 3-1 on the season after allowing just 1 run on 4 hits and a walk with 2 strikeouts over 7.0 innings, matching his longest start of the season. Naderer at one point sat down nine straight Sea Lions. For the Sea Lions, Sebastian Santos suffered his first loss of the season after being charged with 7 runs on 8 hits and 3 walks with a strikeout over 4.2 innings.
“Andrew did a really good job tonight,” Stankiewicz said. “He pitched to contact and made big pitches when he had to. I am proud of the way he handled tonight given the conditions. It was a good bounce back for sure.”
Three players collected three hits tonight, beginning with
Brian Kraft, who found himself at the top of the order for the first time.
Derek Mendoza and
Brandon Smith also had three knocks for the ‘Lopes, while
Seth Fretheim and
Steven Swingle added two apiece. Smith tallied 3 RBI, while Fretheim and Mendoza each collected two.
“We made some changes in our batting order,” added Stankiewicz. “We put Brian in that top spot and he had some quality at-bats tonight. I’m not sure that is the position he is used to, but he responded well. Once the first inning is over, being the leadoff guy doesn’t really matter anymore. Seth continues to have great at-bats and Derek swung the bat well. I was pleased with the way we ran the bases better and played better baseball tonight.
GCU got on the board first when Mendoza singled up the middle with two outs to bring home Kraft, who had reached via a single to lead off the bottom of the first inning.
The ‘Lopes exploded for five runs in the bottom of the third inning to extend their lead to 6-0.
Kyle Raidy opened the frame with a walk, stole second, move to third on a groundout from Kraft, and scored via a sacrifice fly off the bat of
Michael Pomeroy. Fretheim, who was hit by a pitch with one out, scored on a single from Mendoza, who came around to score on a
Garrett Jeffries single. Swingle and Jeffries both crossed home plate on a 2-run single from Smith.
The Sea Lions broke up the shutout and scored their lone run of the game in the top of the fifth inning when a runner came home via a sacrifice fly.
GCU responded with a run of their own in the bottom half of the frame when
Paul Panaccione singled home Smith.
The ‘Lopes had another big inning in the seventh as they plated five more runs to build a 12-1 advantage. Smith started the frame with a double, moved to third on a wild pitch and scored on an RBI single from Raidy. Raidy scored two batters later when Fretheim drove him home with his second hit of the game. Kraft, Pomeroy and Mendoza also came around to score before the third out was recorded.
That would end the scoring for the game, as just four more outs were recorded before the contest was called due to heavy rain.
The doubleheader will take place tomorrow at the originally scheduled 12 p.m. start time. Fans can follow the action via live stats by visiting
