Grand Canyon got a pair of shutouts from pitchers
Stephanie Pesqueira and
Kiki Sepulveda to sweep a Pacific West Conference doubleheader from visiting Notre Dame de Namur at Stapleton-Pierson Field Tuesday.
It was the opening PacWest series for the 24th-ranked Antelopes, who won games by identical 5-0 scores. GCU is 14-5 overall and 2-0 in the PacWest. NDNU, who is receiving votes in the national poll and coming off a doubleheader sweep from No. 11 Dixie State, dropped to 10-5 and 5-3.
The teams meet again for a noon doubleheader Wednesday to wrap up the four-game series.
“It was a good day,” said GCU coach Ann Pierson. “Notre Dame is one of the hottest teams in the country if not the hottest. We knew it was going to be a battle coming into this series. We’re fortunate and proud to get two wins against a very good team.”
Neither GCU pitcher walked a batter, and only one Argonaut base-runner reached third base. Pesqueira had a no-hitter for five and two-thirds innings and gave up just three hits, while striking out four and hitting one in the Game 1 victory. Sepulveda scattered five hits without a strikeout and also hit one batter.
“Kiki and Pesky were both great,” added Pierson. “They were keeping them off balance and the defense played well.”
The Antelopes scored all five of their first-game runs in the fourth.
Kayla Henry keyed the inning with a three-run triple.
GCU had just five hits off NDNU ace Sammy McConvey. Three of the hits came in the fourth.
Kelsey Barak opened the inning with a double.
Lauren Regester reached on an error and
Kailey Regester loaded the bases with a bunt-single. After Barak was forced at the plate,
Nicole Newbury and
Haley Walker were hit by a pitch and walked, respectively, for a 2-0 GCU lead. Henry followed with a triple.
Grand Canyon left six runners on base in the first two innings of Game 2. The Antelopes scored once in the second. Newbury led off with a single, moved to second on a wild pitch and to third on a sacrifice bunt by
Stephanie Smith. Walker had an infield single, the first of her three hits, but Newbury was unable to advance. When Walker stole second the throw was errant, letting Newbury score easily from third.
Four singles -- by Walker, Henry, Barak and Lauren Regester – plated a run in the fourth and the Antelopes added three more in the sixth. Kailey Regester had the big hit of the inning, a two-out, two-run single. Walker, Henry and
Claire Zampini also had singles in the frame.
“We know we have two more really tough games tomorrow,” added Pierson.
