In its inaugural home sand volleyball matches, Grand Canyon lost 5-0 to No. 5 Hawai’i and 4-1 to Loyola Marymount Saturday.
GCU coach Kris Naber was happy with her team’s improvement, four of the five pairings were playing together for just the second day and for the first time in official competition.
Against LMU, shortly after the Lions had knocked off No. 5 Hawai’i, GCU’s No. 2 pairing of
Sara Bowden and
Kristen Johannsen defeated Kenna Crouse and Taylor Scioscia, 21-13, 12-21, 23-21.
It was the first time this season the team had one a three-setter after winning the first set.
“That was a shining light,” said Naber. “That’s where we want our program to go. (Bowden and Johannsen) dominated early, had to battle back and showed great composure.”
The Antelopes were on the verge of getting their first two-win match. At No. 3,
Caelen Hiller and
Chloe Jenkins, also playing for the first time, lost 15-21, 21-17, 15-13 to Hannah Tedrow and Amber Mirabello.
In the 5-0 loss to Hawai’i, GCU’s No. 1 team of
Mackenzie Phelps and
Shannon Dugan, another group playing for the first time together, stretched the match to three sets before falling 22-20, 16-21, 15-11 to Natasha Bell and Jane Croson.
Beginning at 10 a.m. Sunday, the same three teams meet again in a pairs 15-team bracket tournament at Victory Lanes Sports Park.
