Nicole Upshaw hit a grand slam in the fifth inning to give the Antelopes an 11-3 five-inning, run-rule victory over Fort Lewis in their first game of the Fourth Annual MSUB Desert Stinger Tournament at Majestic Park in Las Vegas, Nev., Friday.
In game, two freshman
Kailey Regester threw a two-hitter and struck out seven in a 2-1 victory over UC-Colorado Springs. Regester also had a double and two of GCU's seven hits.
"We beat two good teams," said GCU coach Ann Pierson. "We had great energy and really fought hard and battled."
In the opener, the Antelopes scored eight runs in the fifth, breaking a 3-3 tie and ending the game due to the 8-run mercy rule.
Haley Walker had a two-run double in the inning. GCU benefitted from four fifth-inning Fort Lewis errors.
Stephanie Pesqueira improved to 3-0 by fanning five and giving up only one earned run.
Grand Canyon had seven hits, getting one hit each from seven players.
Lauren Regester drove in two runs and hit her second double of the season. Lauren Regester,
Claire Zampini, Walker and Upshaw each scored two runs. Zampini had a hit and drew two walks. Lauren Regester also drew two of GCU's eight bases on balls.
"We started a little slow (in the cold and windy weather)," Pierson said.
"Pesky threw well and our defense played well behind her," added the coach.
In the second game, GCU scored twice in the fifth inning to go ahead for good. Lauren Regester's single drove in the go-ahead run. Walker started the inning with a single.
Kailey Regester upped her mark to 2-1, while picking up her first collegiate hit.
"She threw a good game, by far, her best of the season," said Pierson. "She pounded the zone and really hit her spots."
GCU will take on Western Washington and Simon Fraser of the Great Northwest Athletic Conference at 5:30 p.m. and 8 p.m., respectively. The Antelopes will play Sonoma State Sunday at 3 p.m.
"It was a good start, but tomorrow real be a hard day," added Pierson.
