The Grand Canyon University baseball team fell, 6-2, tonight to visiting Colorado Mesa at Brazell Stadium. The loss, which snapped the Antelopes’ five-game win streak, moves GCU’s overall record to 5-3, while the Mavericks are now 5-4.
GCU starter
Andrew Naderer was charged with his first loss of the season after allowing 6 runs (4 earned) on 6 hits and 3 walks with 3 strikeouts over 4.0 innings. Mavericks starter Nolen Snell was effective through 7.0 innings, allowing just 1 run on 5 hits.
“That’s a good ball club, they have had a success for a long time,” said head coach Andy Stankiewicz. “They came out tonight and they wanted to win more than we did. Snell has had success for a reason and he did a great job tonight. He attacks hitters and is very aggressive. Our guys were tardy on the fast ball.”
“Andrew looked like a freshman tonight,” Stankiewicz said. “He was the opposite of their guy. He couldn’t throw his fastball for a strike, so he has to be able to command his fastball in and out of the zone. But that’s what this is for. The struggle he had tonight will make him a better pitcher down the road.”
Relievers
Coley Bruns,
Kevin Behnke, and
Brandon Bonilla combined to toss 5.0 scoreless innings, allowing just two hits during that time.
Brandon Smith led the way offensively for GCU, going 2-for-3 at the plate. Six other ‘Lopes players collected a hit in the game.
CMU started the scoring early, plating two runs in the first through third innings, though GCU was able to shut down their offense for the remainder of the game. The ‘Lopes got on the board in the third inning when
Harlyn Griffiths came around to score after drawing a leadoff walk.
The next five innings saw the pitching staffs put up zeroes. GCU added another run in the ninth inning when
Garrett Jeffries led off the frame with a walk, advanced to second on a Smith single, advanced to third on pinch-hitter
Brian Kraft's single, and scored via a sacrifice fly off the bat of Griffiths.
The two squads will play the rubber match of the three-game series when they meet tomorrow at 12 p.m. at Brazell Stadium. Fans can follow the action via live stats by visiting

“We have to forget about it,” Stankiewicz added. “We have to go home and get a good night’s rest and come back tomorrow ready to get after it and win the series.”
