Grand Canyon split games Saturday, but still won its pool, in the National Fastpitch Coaches Association Leadoff Classic in Tucson.
The Antelopes (12-3) lost 5-2 to Texas Woman’s University and won 8-0, in five innings, against Regis. GCU will play West Texas A&M at 10 a.m. Sunday in the semifinal of the Gold Bracket. At noon, the 'Lopes will play either SE Oklahoma State or get a rematch with Texas Woman's.
GCU bounced back from its loss to the Pioneers by taking care of business quickly against the Rangers.
GCU scored six runs in the first two innings and pitcher
Stephanie Pesqueira impressed with one-hit pitching.
Kailey Regester hit a two-run first-inning single to score
Claire Zampini and
Kelsey Barak, who had both walked. The Antelopes scored four times in the second, the big hit was a three-run double from
Lauren Regester, who leads the team with 20 RBIs. Lauren Regester’s two-base hit was the lone knock of the inning. Regis committed an error on a Haley Walker bunt, while GCU hitters
Stephanie Smith,
Kayla Henry and Barak all drew walks. Zampini had an RBI-ground out.
“Lauren is seeing the ball like it’s a beach ball,” said GCU coach Ann Pierson. “It doesn’t matter the speed of the pitch, she’s locked in right now and it’s great having people get on ahead of her.”
The lone hit off Pesqueira came on a fourth-inning single to left field by Breanna Backlund. The Antelopes ended the game early on the eight-run mercy rule. In the fifth, Henry had a two-run single, scoring Pesqueira and
Nicole Newbury.
Pesqueria fanned seven and walked two.
“Pesky threw a great game,” said Pierson. “It was a good way to end the day.”
In the opener, Kailey Regester took the loss and dropped to 3-2. She also accounted for GCU’s only runs with a two-run home run. Lauren Regester scored on the play, after her second double of the game.
“We had our chances (against Texas Woman’s) to do some things,” said Pierson. “We made some base-running mistakes that we can’t make and made some mistakes that don’t show up in the scorebook. We have to tighten up things on both sides of the ball, and we did that in the second game.”
