The 21 wins are the most in the Pennell era and most in a season for GCU since the 2006-07 season. The last time a ‘Lopes team won 22 games was during the 1996-97 campaign when GCU won 23. The 40 wins over the past two years has not been done since the Antelopes won 40 games during the 2005-06 (19) and 2006-07 (21) seasons.
The game was played at a frenetic pace from the opening tip and had the fans at the Conlon Center on their feet throughout the contest.
GCU trailed 53-52 until two
Justin Foreman free throws put them up one with 6:43 remaining.
Joshua Lowery’s dunk off a Penguin turnover increased the lead to 58-55. Two more Foreman free throws extended the lead back to three at 60-57 with 58 seconds left and set the stage for the wild final minute.
Dominican’s Myles Carrillo was fouled on a put back attempt and hit both of his free throws to cut the Antelope lead to one with 47 seconds left on the clock. Joshua Lowery scored on a driving layup with 19 seconds to go to give GCU a 62-59 lead.
Killian Larson picked up his fifth foul with 8.3 seconds left and allowed Jammall Clark to sink two free throws to bring the game to 62-61.
Joshua Lowery was then whistled for an offensive foul in the back court giving the Penguins the ball with five seconds left. Dominican would put the ball in Ricky Wofford’s hands who drove to his right for a last second shot that was altered by Braylon Pickrel and fell short, giving the ‘Lopes the win.
GCU, playing in its fourth game in eight days and as part of this 10-day trip, started quickly, scoring the game’s first 11 points. The Penguins would respond with a 19-4 run to take their first lead of the game. GCU controlled the last five minute of the half and went into the break with a 40-33 advantage.
The Antelopes shot 62% (13-for-21) in the opening half.
Canyon was led by Joshua Lowery’s 16 points on 5-for-7 shooting.
Jerome Garrison was 6-for-9 from the field and had 14. Larson had 12 points and six rebounds in his return to Dominican, a school he transferred to GCU from prior to the 2011-12 season.
GCU won the battle on the boards, 29-26 and continued their clutch shooting from the free throw line, going 17-for-20.
Grand Canyon will now return home where they will face Hawai’i Pacific on Saturday, Feb. 23 at 6:30 p.m. The Antelopes will play their final home game of season on Tuesday, Feb. 26 against BYU-Hawai’i.
