Grand Canyon dropped a 4-0 decision to Sonoma State in its final game of the Fourth Annual Desert Stinger Tournament in Las Vegas, Sunday.
GCU is 9-2 overall. The Antelopes went 4-1 in the tournament.
"Overall it was a great weekend. We really battled," said GCU coach Ann Pierson.
Sonoma State scored all four of its runs in the fourth inning, three coming on a bases-loaded double. GCU got its first three runners on in the fourth.
Kelsey Barak,
Lauren Regester and
Stephanie Pesqueira all had singles, but all were left stranded.
The Antelopes had five hits. Along with the three singles,
Kayla Henry had two hits.
"We were timid at the plate. (Sonoma State pitcher Samantha Lipperd) threw well, but we let her control our at-bats," Pierson said. "It wasn't the same approach we had all weekend."
Pesqueira’s record falls to 3-1. She gave up five hits, two walks and had one strikeout.
"Overall, Pesky threw well," Pierson added.
GCU returns to action in the NFCA Leadoff Classic in Tucson from Feb. 15-17. GCU takes on Abilene Christian (10 a.m.) and Nova Southeastern (2 p.m.) on Friday and Texas Woman’s (10 a.m.) and Regis (noon) on Saturday. A single-elimination tournament will take place Sunday.
