Grand Canyon opened its softball season with a split of two games in the GCU Invitational at Stapleton-Pierson Field Friday. The Antelopes opened with a 3-1 victory over Western New Mexico, and then lost 8-2 to Midwestern State.
"You always want to come out 2-0, but I was happy with our approach in Game 1," said GCU coach Ann Pierson.
The Antelopes (1-0) will play both clubs again Saturday. GCU takes on Midwestern State at 10 a.m. and Western New Mexico at 12:30 p.m. Fans can follow the action with live stats available at www.GCULopes.com.
In the opener,
Stephanie Pesqueira, a transfer from CSU Monterey Bay, earned the complete game victory, striking out five, walking two and giving up only four hits. She also had two hits and started the Antelopes' scoring with a single to lead off the third.
Pesqueira's leadoff single was followed by a walk to
Haley Walker.
Kayla Henry sacrificed the runners to second and third and Pesqueira scored the first run of the game on a sacrifice fly by
Claire Zampini.
GCU took a 2-0 advantage in the fourth.
Lauren Regester opened the inning with a single. She was forced out at second base on a ground ball off the bat of
Nicole Upshaw, who later stole second base and scored on a two-out single by freshman
Nicole Newbury.
WNMU cut it to 2-1 on a home run by Kale Gahn, who had three of the Mustangs four hits. The Antelopes added insurance in the sixth when Walker drove in Newbury, who had reached on a fielder's choice, with a single.
GCU had eight hits, two each from Pesqueira, Walker and Lauren Regester.
"Pesky really pitched well and I thought (Upshaw) did a good job behind the plate. Our defense was outstanding and we were able to manufacture some runs," Pierson said.
Against Midwestern State, the Antelopes were down 4-0 before coming up with one run in the fourth.
Kelsey Barak started the inning with a double and later scored on a Newbury ground out. In the seventh, GCU's
Kiki Sepulveda hit a solo homer for the other run.
"I thought we were apprehensive in Game 2. We need to have a more aggressive approach," said Pierson. "We were out-pitched and out-hit.
"(Midwestern State) has always been a strong hitting team and they showed that. I think we can be a strong hitting team, too. Their pitcher threw well and we have to adjust sooner next time."
Freshman
Kailey Regester suffered the loss in her collegiate pitching debut.
Henry had three of the Antelopes eight hits, including a double.
"We've got to come out with more fire (Saturday)," Pierson said.
