The University of San Diego used 68 percent shooting in the first half to propel them to a 70-59 win over the Grand Canyon University men's basketball team tonight at the Jenny Craig Pavilion in San Diego, Calif.
The loss drops the Antelopes to 0-2 on the young season, while San Diego improved to 2-0.
A night after trailing by 12 at the half, the Antelopes put themselves in a similar hole, trailing by 13. Coming out of the break, the Toreros built a 17-point bulge, but it was then where the team once again showed its will to battle.
Killian Larson scored five points during a 9-2 run that brought the 'Lopes within 10. USD pushed the lead back up to 14, but once again the Antelopes rallied.
Down 64-51 with just under five to go,
Blake Davis would make two free throws and a Larson jumper brought the game to 64-55. GCU made a defensive stop, but a Davis three-pointer rattled out, missing a chance to cut the lead to six. A 6-0 San Diego run closed out the Antelopes' chance for its first win.
Larson, who had 12 double-doubles last season, produced his first this season with 14 points and 15 rebounds. The 15 boards were one shy of tying his career high.
A night after scoring 17,
Demetrius Walker tied his career high with 19 points.
GCU got off to a fast start this evening; shooting 57 percent to grab a 13-7 lead just over six minutes into the game. From there the Toreros began to heat up, using a 9-0 run to highlight their hot shooting (15-for-22), taking a lead of 40-27 into the half.
Grand Canyon will now return home to GCU Arena with a game against Western New Mexico on Nov. 16 at 7 p.m. Tickets can be purchased by going to
