The Grand Canyon University men’s basketball team closed out their road trip with an 83-68 loss at Fresno Pacific today in Fresno, Calif. With the loss, the Antelopes fall to 14-4 overall and 5-2 in the Pacific West Conference. The Sunbirds improved to 8-6 overall, 3-3 in conference play and 6-0 at home.
For the Antelopes, it was their second-straight loss after winning 13 straight.
“We knew Fresno Pacific was going to be a tough team,” said head coach Russ Pennell. “They gave us problems when we played them down in Phoenix. I was disappointed in our first half. They were beating us down the floor and we didn’t come in with our usual look about us. It has been a tough trip. The Dixie loss set us back a bit, but we should be more mature to overcome that. We didn’t and this will be another learning opportunity for us.”
The two teams traded baskets early with the Antelopes holding a 13-11 lead with just over 14 minutes remaining in the half. It was, however, the last lead the Antelopes would hold, as they found themselves trailing 44-26 at the half.
FPU shot 56 percent (15-for-27) in the opening half, compared to 26 percent (8-for-31) for GCU.
Justin Foreman would score nine of his season-high 14 points in the second half and helped the ‘Lopes cut the Sunbirds lead to 13 with just over five minutes gone in the second half.
“I thought Justin did everything he could to give us a chance to win tonight,” added Pennell. “We have challenged him to be more aggressive at the rim and he was tonight. Defensively he was one of the bright spots for us with his hard play and we need to get more guys playing like that.”
The Sunbirds were not shooting at the clip they did in the first 20 minutes, but kept the Antelopes at bay by consistently finding themselves at the free throw line. The Sunbirds made 22-of-26 from the charity stripe in the second half en route to an 85 percent performance for the game (33-for-39). Fresno Pacific also carried a 40-31 advantage on the boards.
Killian Larson recorded his sixth double-double of the season and fourth in the past six games with 14 points and 10 rebounds.
Joshua Lowery had 10 points, while
Camyn Boone scored eight of the bench.
For the second straight game GCU struggled from behind the arc, making only 2-of-16 three-point attempts. The Antelopes forced 17 turnovers and scored 23 points off them.
GCU will now return home for the first of four straight at GCU Arena when they welcome Point Loma on Jan. 19 with tipoff slated for 3:15 p.m. Fans can follow the action via live by visiting
