With 3-0 victories over Fort Hays State and Oklahoma Panhandle State in the Holiday Inn Crossroads Classic in Grand Junction, Colo., Saturday, No. 24 Grand Canyon improved to 8-0, tying the school record for best start to a season.
GCU was also 8-0 to start the 1991 season.
The Antelopes beat Fort Hays State in the morning, 25-19. 25-22, 25-15 and downed Oklahoma Panhandle State in the evening, 25-17, 25-11, 25-8.
“Records are great. They’re something to shoot for and proud of when you get them, but this team has goals they want to accomplish at the end of the season and that’s where our eyes are set,” said GCU coach Kris Naber.
The Antelopes set a school mark at the end of the 2011 season with 14 consecutive wins. Over two seasons, they have won 22 of their last 23 matches.
Junior middle blocker
Kristen Johannsen had eight kills and eight total blocks in the morning and wrapped things up against OPSU with a GCU-best 11 kills.
“She controlled the net offensively and defensively,” said Naber.
GCU looks to set a new mark Saturday morning at 8 a.m. when it takes on Texas Woman’s University. The trip wraps up at 2:30 p.m. with a contest against Western State.
Johansen had eight kills, a .500 attack percentage and two solo blocks against Fort Hays State.
Sophomore
Hayleigh Friemoth had a team-high nine kills. Senior setter
Kristen Preach had 33 assists. Sophomore libero
Mackenzie Phelps had 17 digs.
Against Panhandle State, Johannsen hit .714 with only one error in 14 tries. Preach had 19 assists and three service aces. Junior setter
Jessica Posse added 13 assists. Phelps had 15 digs.
Senior right side
Sydney McDowell had seven kills, two digs and one block assist.
Grand Canyon hit .338 compared to OPSU’s -.011.
“It was a team effort,” added Naber of the Friday night victory. “We played consistent volleyball and played at a high level the entire match. It was good to get everyone experience.
“With every good thing we do, it is another step closer to where we want to be at the end of the season.”
