Grand Canyon University head baseball coach Andy Stankiewicz has spent the last several days in Cary, North Carolina with the USA Baseball Collegiate National Team as they prepare for their overseas trip to Cuba and The Netherlands. The team had one day of practice before beginning a tour of the Coastal Plain League against teams like Fayetteville, Wilmington, Morehead City and Catawba Valley All-Stars.
“The first week here has been somewhat of a whirlwind,” said Stankiewicz. “We got here late on Saturday night and got situated in the hotel. Sunday, we met the players and held our first practice. And on Monday, we jumped on a bus and started playing ballgames. Tonight will be our fourth game in four different cities. There is a lot going on, but we are also getting a lot accomplished.”
The squad is off to a 3-0 start, after notching wins against Fayetteville (11-6), Wilmington (7-4) and Morehead City (6-1).
“Right now, we are trying to find right combination as quickly as possible,” Stankiewicz explained. “During our seasons, we have the fall to figure things out before the season starts. But here, we essentially had one day of practice to put the right guys in the right spot. It’s not easy, but the great part is that we have so many highly-skilled players and that certainly helps. We are focused on getting the chemistry right, both defensively and offensively.”
Among those players on the roster are three with ties to Arizona, as Johnny Field hails from the University of Arizona, Trevor Williams from Arizona State and D.J. Peterson is a local from Gilbert.
“Trevor was our Opening Day starter against Fayetteville and he pitched a nice ballgame for us,” Stankiewicz said. “He is an aggressive kid and fun to watch work. Trevor believes in himself and has done a great job. D.J. has a great track record with the bat and got some timely hits for us in our first few games. We are counting on him to be in the middle of the lineup. And we are looking forward to Johnny joining us soon. He is coming off of a national championship with Arizona and I’m sure he is flying high. We are excited to have him.”
Following their final game against Coastal Plain League opponents tonight, when they face the Catawba Valley All-Stars, the squad will turn their attention back to the National Training Complex for a series of games against USA Baseball 18U National Teams. The Collegiate National Team will then travel to Cuba on July 4 with their first game against the Cuban National Team scheduled for the following day.
“It has been great to play games and it allows for a lot of these guys to get their work in,” explained Stankiewicz. “It has allowed our pitchers to throw innings and our hitters to see live pitching as we continue to figure out our lineup. Once we get back to Cary, we will have several matchups with the 18U National Team. We are going to have two games against them and two where they are actually going to mix our players with their guys. So it will allow for these high schoolers to play alongside college players and vice versa. It will be a fun event for both teams before going on our respective tours. I think it is a really neat format.”
