Grand Canyon (36-21) had its softball season come to an end with a 4-1 loss to No. 10 CSU Dominguez Hills in the NCAA Division II West I Region championship game in Carson, Calif., Sunday.
The Toros (44-13) scored all four of their runs in the sixth inning to take a 4-0 lead. Grand Canyon scored its lone run in the seventh.
Kelsey Barak hit a double and scored on an outfield error on a single by
Claire Zampini.
It was Grand Canyon’s first trip to the regional softball championship game. On Saturday, the Antelopes won their first NCAA tournament games, defeating Chico State, 2-1, and Sonoma State, 1-0, to advance to the championship.
“I told them they’ve set the bar for future teams with their successes as a team, individually and their character,” said GCU coach Ann Pierson. “This is the most special group I’ve been a part of. The kids, the support from their family and friends has been unbelievable. I can’t thank them and all the support staff enough.”
It was just the second NCAA appearance for the program that is only in its ninth year. In 2010, GCU qualified for the regional as a No. 3 seed and lost a pair of one-run games to Chico State 5-4 and Dixie State 3-2.
Sunday’s title game was like most in the region, tight and low-scoring throughout.
Through five innings neither team had scored and only had one hit each.
A lead-off second-inning single from
Lauren Regester was Grand Canyon’s only hit until the seventh inning doubles from Barak and Zampini.
Winning pitcher Stephanie Jimenez broke up the no-hitter for GCU pitcher
Kiki Sepulveda with a single in the fourth.
Sepulveda had thrown 29 innings without giving up an earned run before control troubles in the sixth. Dominguez Hills drew three walks and a hit batsmen and had another run score on a wild pitch.
“I can’t say enough for how Kiki threw the entire weekend,” said Pierson.
It looked like GCU might get out of trouble when Jimenez lined to
Vanessa Chavez at second, who throw to Regester at first to double up pinch-runner Ciara Campos, but a wild pitch and pair of RBI-singles by Daisy Beltran and pinch-hitter Brittany Brenner gave the Toros a 4-0 advantage. Two scored on a the pinch-hit from Brenner.
For Jimenez, it was her second win of the weekend against GCU.
“She threw a great game again,” said Pierson. “I felt we had better at-bats today and that’s all you can ask from a young team, to keep getting better.”
Sepulveda and outfielders
Kara Holtorf and
Kayla Henry were selected to the all-tournament team. Jimenez was named the tournament's most outstanding player.
