In game two, the Antelopes jumped out to a quick 2-0 lead and led 4-0 prior to the Gators’ three-run sixth inning.
Stephanie Smith reached on a single and
Kara Holtorf got on with an error prior to a two-run single by
Lauren Regester to give GCU a 2-0 first-inning lead. It was a similar beginning to the fifth inning. Smith singled and Holtorf reached on an error again. This time, Smith scored on a sacrifice fly by
Kelsey Barak. The fourth run came in the sixth.
Claire Zampini and
Kayla Henry both got on with SF State errors. Zampini scored on a Smith ground out.
Brittany Manzoline (2-1) earned the win, pitching the first five innings.
Kiley Raica picked up her second save of the season.
“Brittany had her best game,” said GCU coach Ann Pierson. “(Stephanie Smith) was really hot today. She was an incredible sparkplug for us. She made some great plays at third base and drove the ball at the plate.”
The Antelopes managed just four hits off Gators pitcher Marisa Ibarra in the opener. All four hits were singles. Smith had two hits. Holtorf and
Haley Walker also had hits.
Barak had her 13-game hitting streak come to an end in game 1. Raica took the loss to fall to 7-3.
“Kiley pitched a great game. San Francisco State was just able to manufacture runs,” said Pierson. “We had our opportunities. We got people on and in scoring position, but we couldn’t get the hit to drive them in.”
GCU left seven on base in the first game.
