The 18
th-ranked Grand Canyon University women’s basketball team won their seventh straight contest as they defeated Cal State Stanislaus, 82-64, tonight in San Francisco, Calif. The win improved the Antelopes to 8-2 overall, while the Warriors fells to 0-7.
Judy Jones recorded her fifth straight double-double and sixth straight double-digit scoring effort as she collected 23 points and 10 rebounds, both of which led the squad.
Erica Paskell added a season-high 16 points. In total, eight different GCU players got on the board in the game.
“We battled back tonight,” said head coach Trent May. “We have gone through some first halves this season where we found ourselves trying to adjust to the other teams. At one point, we were trailing by eight points, but the team did a good job of responding. A bright moment for us tonight was Erica coming into game and scoring some big three-pointers. That was a good thing to see. And in the second half, we really picked it up and shared the ball well. It is always good to get a convincing win on the road.”
GCU shot 42.2 percent from the field (27-for-64) and drained a season-high nine three-pointers. The ‘Lopes outrebounded Stanislaus, 45-29, including 17 on the offensive boards.
“We have done a good job of scoring inside and rebounding,” said May. “We have to be able and should do those things game in and game out. That part of our game has been really effective for us.”
The teams traded baskets to open the game before the Warriors used an 8-0 run to build a 14-6 lead with 12:48 to play in the first half. The Warriors fought off a number of GCU rallies until the ‘Lopes took their first lead of the game, 25-24, with 3:53 to play in the first. The remainder of the half was tightly contested, as the largest lead GCU would build was the three-point advantage with a minute and a half on the clock. The Warriors scored the final basket of the first 20 minutes as the ‘Lopes carried a 33-32 advantage into the locker room.
GCU was led at the half by Paskell, who had already scored a season-high 12 points on 4-for-7 shooting from behind the arc. The Warriors would make it a single-digit game just once more (57-48) before GCU scored 10 unanswered points to make it a 67-48 game with 8:54 to play. The ‘Lopes remained in control for the rest of the game, as the closest Stanislaus would come was 17 points.
The ‘Lopes led by as many as 23 points in the second half as they shot 44.4 percent from the field (16-for-36), including 20 points in the paint.
“It was great to have a good second half when we really needed to have a good second half,” added May.
