Grand Canyon University's softball program has added two local talents for the 2011-12 season.
Head coach Ann Pierson has signed Phoenix Pinnacle outfielder Haley Walker and Chandler Hamilton infielder Nicole Upshaw to national letters-of-intent.
Walker, a left-handed hitting outfielder, hit .492 last season and had 33 stolen bases. She scored 47 runs and had 17 RBIs.
"Haley will add a tremendous amount of speed to our lineup," Pierson said. "She can bunt, slap, power slap and hit away. She's a fine-tuned defender, also, and has a strong arm.
"She'll bring energy to both sides of the ball and we're looking forward to turning her loose against our opponents."
Upshaw is a shortstop who can also play other positions in the infield and outfield. She hit .387 last season with 17 extra-base hits, including five home runs. She drove in 25 runs and added 16 stolen bases. She had a .500 on-base percentage and .720 slugging percentage.
"Nicole brings strength and versatility to the lineup and can play anywhere in the infield and outfield," Pierson said. "She's also a quick, explosive baserunner and has power to all fields ... a very strong competitor with tremendous game sense."
