The Arizona Diamondbacks announced last night that they have selected the contract of former Grand Canyon University baseball player Cody Ransom from Triple-A Reno.
Ransom played one season for the ‘Lopes, starting every game at shortstop in 1998, hitting .330 with eight home runs and 48 RBI, while leading the team with 20 doubles. He helped lead the ’98 squad to the Western Athletic Conference Northern Division crown during their stint in the Division I conference.
Ransom, 35, hit .331 (114-for-344) with 28 doubles, three triples, 26 home runs and 89 RBI in 92 games with Reno this season. He has played in parts of eight Major League seasons with the San Francisco Giants, Houston Astros, New York Yankees and Philadelphia Phillies. Ransom owns a .227 career average (69-for-304) with 21 doubles, a triple, nine home runs and 39 RBI in 219 games. Ransom signed a minor league free agent contract with the D-backs on Nov. 19, 2010.
Ransom is one of 14 GCU players to reach the Major League level. Brian Broderick became the 14th player to accomplish the feat when he made the Washington Nationals’ Opening Day roster this year.
