Both teams held tryouts this past weekend that brought in over 70 combined applicants. "We could not be happier with the turn-out at tryouts. It really shows how much the interest level in our programs is growing," says cheer coach Emily Stephens and dance coach Eva St Arnauld.
Tryouts are a grueling 4-day process that includes learning the GCU fight song, intricate choreography, turns and leaps, and showcasing personal dance numbers during the dance auditions.
The cheerleaders learn a number of cheers, the GCU fight song, showcase their tumbling and stunting skills, and are evaluated on their strength and conditioning level. Both groups are interviewed and evaluated by a professional panel of expert judges.
The teams were finalized Saturday with the dance team taking 14 women and the cheer team taking 12 women and 2 men. The cheer team is looking to add more men members this fall.
"The talent level is higher than it has ever been and this year forecasts excellent teams with experienced, focused and dedicated members. Thank you to the enrollment teams for helping us with this process.”
