The Grand Canyon University softball team overcame a 6-0 deficit and scored 11 runs in the final two innings to defeat Academy of Art, 11-9, in the first game of today's Pacific West Conference doubleheader at Stapleton-Pierson Field in Phoenix. The Antelopes lost the second game, 5-4, in 10 innings when the Urban Knights scored two runs in the bottom of the 10th after GCU took a 4-3 lead in the top of the inning.
Today's doubleheader marked the final two games of the 2011 season for both the 'Lopes and Urban Knight. GCU finished with a record of 22-25 overall, 14-14 and in fifth place in the PacWest. Academy of Arts was 29-10, 17-11 and in fourth.
Today was Senior Day, and the 'Lopes' three seniors -- outfielder Teddy Barry (Glendale, AZ/Greenway, Phoenix College), third baseman/first baseman Montana Lucas (Glendale, AZ/Cactus, Phoenix College) and first baseman Michelle Rasmussen (Puyallup, WA/Emerald Ridge, Arizona Western College) -- were recognized in the pregame ceremonies for their contributions to the GCU softball program and the university in general.
Barry made the most of her second-to-last game in a purple and black uniform. She went 2-for-4 with a home run, six RBI and two runs scored.
Other top offensive performers for the 'Lopes included freshman Claire Zampini, who was 2-for-3 with a stolen base and one run scored; junior designated player Vanessa Ramirez (Phoenix, AZ/St. Mary's, Mesa Community College), who went 2-for-4 with one run scored; junior outfielder Brittany Manzoline (Peoria, AZ/Cactus, Phoenix College, Glendale Community College), who was 2-for-4 with a double and two runs scored; and sophomore catcher Khristian Morrell (Glendale, AZ/Mountain Ridge), who got her first hit of the season and scored two runs.
Freshman Dani Jackman (Mill Creek, WA/Henry M. Jackson) started for GCU and pitched four innings. She allowed six hits and six runs, all of which were earned, walked three and recorded three strikeouts. Freshman Danielle Legee (Lebanon, OR/Lebanon) pitched the next two innings and gave up three hits and three runs, all of which wer earned, and junior Ivy Campas (Tucson, AZ/Sunnyside) pitched the final inning and allowed one hit.
Legee got the win to improve to 4-2 on the season, and Campas earned her second save.
In the second game, freshman shortstop Stephanie Smith (Phoenix, AZ/Sanda Day O'Connor) went 3-for-5; Zampini was 3-for-5 with one RBI, one run scored and was hit by a pitch; Barry went 2-for-5 with a stolen base; Rasmussen was 2-for-5 with one RBI; Ramirez went 2-for-4 with a sacrifice bunt; and junior outfielder Kara Holtorf (Peoria, AZ/Sunrise Mountain) was 2-for-5 with one run scored.
Campas started and pitched all 9 2/3 innings. She gave up 11 hits and four runs, all of which were earned, walked just one and had seven strikeouts.
She took the loss and finished 6-13 this season.
In this weekend's four-game series, Barry went 9 for 17 (.529) with 13 RBI and four runs scored.
