Grand Canyon University won both ends of a Pacific West Conference softball doubleheader with Notre Dame de Namur, 4-2 and 9-1, today at Stapleton-Pierson Field in Phoenix.
The Antelopes improved to 19-22 overall, 11-11 in the PacWest. The Argonauts fell to 21-27, 10-13.
In Game 1, GCU scored one run in the bottom of the first inning, two in the fourth and one in the fifth. It had eight hits, led by freshman second baseman Claire Zampini (Phoenix, AZ/Deer Valley), who went 3-for 4 with two runs scored; senior outfielder Teddy Barry (Glendale, AZ/Greenway, Phoenix College), who was 1-for-3 with two stolen bases and one run scored; and senior first baseman Montana Lucas (Glendale, AZ/Cactus, Phoenix College), who went 2-for-2 with a double, sacrifice fly and three RBI.
Junior Ivy Campas (Tucson, AZ/Sunnyside) pitched a complete game, allowing eight hits and two runs, one of which was earned, walking two and recording seven strikeouts. She is 5-10 on the season.
In Game 2, the 'Lopes pushed two runs across the plate in the top of the fourth, four in the fifth and three in the seventh. They had 13 hits. Zampini was 2-for-5 with a double and two runs scored; Barry went 3-for-3 with three doubles and three runs scored; Lucas was 3-for-4 with a double, four RBI and two runs scored; and junior outfielder Kara Holtorf (Peoria, AZ/Sunrise Mountain) went 2-for-3 with a sacrifice fly, one RBI and one run scored.
Freshman Dani Jackman (Mill Creek, WA/Henry M. Jackson) had a no-hitter through four innings. She, too, pitched a complete game, giving up four hits and one run, which was earned, walking three and having six strikeouts. She raised her season record to 6-7.
GCU and Notre Dame de Namur will play another doubleheader tomorrow. The first game had been scheduled for noon, but it has been changed to 10 a.m.
