Grand Canyon’s women’s volleyball team has signed two incoming freshmen for the 2011 fall season.
Head coach Kris Naber has announced the signing of outside hitters Mackenzie Phelps and Hayleigh Friemoth.
"They're aggressive," said Naber of her two newcomers. "Both kids hit a heavy ball and are all-around players. I'm excited to bring them in and see where they fit in."
Phelps, from Prescott (Ariz.) High School, is a two-time Daily Courier Player of the Year and honor roll student.
The 5-11 outside hitter helped lead her team to a state runner-up finish. She had 392 kills (12.3 per match) in 32 matches. She had 24 digs in the state championship match against Phoenix Sunnyslope. She was twice named 4A-I Western Sky Region Offensive Player of the Year and was a first team 4A-I All-State choice as a senior.
"She's very dynamic across the front row and is used to hitting a variety of sets," Naber said. "She's a solid all-around player."
Friemoth, from Hemet (Calif.) High School, averaged 5.2 kills and 2.5 digs per game. Also, 5-11, Friemoth was the All-CIF Player of the Year in 2010. She was the team and league MVP and led the Southern Section in Division 4A in kills. She was an all-area and all-valley first team choice.
"She brings power and can hit through a block, but also hits with finesse" said Naber, who will announce more signings later during the spring period.
