Sophomore outfielder
Samantha Wyatt (Glendale, AZ/Independence) homered and went 3-for-5 with three RBI and two runs scored to lead the Grand Canyon University softball team to a 10-7 win over Western New Mexico University in a non-conference game today at Mustang Field on the WNMU campus in Silver City, N.M.
The Antelopes improved to 12-10 overall. The Mustangs fell to 11-19.
GCU pounded out 16 hits. Wyatt and senior outfielder
Teddy Barry (Glendale, AZ/Greenway, Phoenix College) had three each, and senior first baseman
Michelle Rasmussen (Puyallup, WA/Emerald Ridge, Arizona Western College), junior pitcher
Ivy Campas (Tucson, AZ/Sunnyside, Phoenix College) and junior catcher
C.J. Norvell (Gilbert, AZ/Mesquite, Chandler-Gilbert Community College) had two apiece.
The Mustangs had 14 hits, including three each by outfielder Davina Flores and second baseman Ashly Eichenberger.
GCU scored five runs in the top of the first inning. With one out, Wyatt singled to left field, Barry reached on an error by shortstop Ashley Gonzales, and freshman designated player
Rachel Meyer (Gilbert, AZ/Mesquite) reached on a fielder's choice. Wyatt was out at third on the play. Rasmussen reached on another error by Gonzales, and Barry scored on a passed ball. Senior third baseman
Montana Lucas (Glendale, AZ/Cactus, Phoenix College) doubled to left, driving in Rasmussen and Meyer. Campas doubled to left, scoring Lucas, and Norvell singled to center field, driving in Campas.
The 'Lopes pushed one run across the plate in the top of the third when Campas walked, advanced to second on an out, advanced to third on a wild pitch and scored on an error by Eichenberger.
In the top of the fifth, GCU scored three more runs. Norvell singled to right field and was pinch-run for by junior outfielder
Vanessa Ramirez (Phoenix, AZ/St. Mary's, Mesa Community College). Ramirez advanced to second on an out and advanced to third on a single by freshman second baseman
Claire Zampini (Phoenix, AZ/Deer Valley), and Wyatt then homered to center.
The 'Lopes scored their final run of the game in the top of the seventh. Wyatt singled to left, Barry singled to center and Rasmussen singled to left, scoring Wyatt.
Campas pitched a complete game. All of the Mustangs' runs were earned, and Campas walked one and recorded one strikeout. She raised her season record to 4-6.
GCU and WNMU play again at noon tomorrow afternoon in Silver City.
