The Grand Canyon University softball team won the second of two games against No. 5-ranked Hawai’i Pacific University today at Howard A Okita Field in Kaneohe, Hawai'i.
GCU beat the Sea Warriors, 1-0, giving HPU its first conference loss of the season. Junior pitcher Kirstin Linert (Phoenix, AZ, Sandra Day O'Connor (Glendale Community College)) kept HPU off the scoreboard and recorded five strikeouts.
The Antelopes scored the game's only run in the sixth inning, when designated player Rachel Meyer (Gilbert, AZ, Mesquite) hit a sacrifice fly to right field, driving in second baseman Claire Zampini (Phoenix, AZ, Deer Valley).
Senior outfielder Teddy Barry (Phoenix, AZ, Greenway HS (Phoenix College)) was 2-for-3 with two stolen bases.
GCU dropped the first game, 7-0. The 'Lopes were able to get only two hits off of the Sea Warriors, compared to nine for HPU.
HPU is the defending NCAA Division II national champion. It has an 11-3 overall record, 3-1 in the Pacific West Conference.
GCU is 2-2 in the PacWest, 8-7 overall. The ‘Lopes will play a doubleheader against Chaminade University tomorrow..
