Grand Canyon is in a tie for first place in the Pacific West Conference after Saturday's 77-62 win over Dominican at Antelope Gymnasium.
With BYU-Hawai'i's loss at home to Chaminade Friday, the Antelopes moved into a three-way tie for first with BYUH and Chaminade. If Dixie State wins its game later Saturday night, it will be a four-way tie. All teams (if Dixie wins) will be 7-2 with seven conference games remaining.
"It's great to be relevant this time of year," said GCU coach Russ Pennell, whose club is 12-7 overall. "This is going to be a race that, literally, goes down to the last game of the season.
"I told our guys, if you don't want to fall out of first place you know how to keep that from happening, but there's a lot of basketball to be played."
After a sluggish first half, GCU outscored Dominican 47-30 in the final 20 minutes.
"I think it was just paying attention to details," said Pennell. "At halftime, we made some adjustments, but more than anything our guys pulled together and saw that this wasn't going to be an easy task so they better get going or it was going to be a long afternoon."
Consecutive 3-pointers from
Brad Carroll gave GCU a 44-40 lead. Dominican got the lead down to one, 44-43, but sophomore
Barret Robbins scored on a tip-in and
Kyle Speed followed with a pair of jumpers for a 50-45 advantage.
The final 15-point margin was GCU's biggest lead of the day.
"I think we really picked it up (in the second half) and everybody rallied around each other and stayed together," said Speed. "We found some energy and started making plays."
Nick Witherill led GCU with 16 points. Speed had 12 and six assists.
Rony Tchatchoua added 10 points.
"We came out in the second half and created our own energy," echoed Witherill on the team's approach to its two-point halftime deficit. "We came out flat, but in the second half we turned up the defensive pressure."
Carroll had his consecutive free-throw streak stopped at 25, but along with seven points, he had a career-high 10 rebounds and four steals. Robbins had a career-high eight rebounds.
Senior
Gaby Ngoundjo had nine points and seven rebounds.
Grand Canyon continues its stretch of home games Thursday with a 7:15 p.m. contest against Hawai'i Pacific.
