The Grand Canyon University men’s basketball team used a strong defensive effort tonight in defeating No. 22 Seattle Pacific 67-58 at Grand Canyon University Arena in Phoenix.
GCU forced the Falcons into 19 turnovers and held them to a 40 percent shooting night from the floor, eight points below their season average.
“We had a long week of practice and really used it to hone in our defense,” added point guard
Kyle Speed. “We knew coming in that it would be a key to win this game and we stepped up to the challenge.”
The Antelopes, who lost on two occasions last season to SPU, took the lead four minutes into the game and would never relinquish it.
“It feels good that we were able to beat a really good basketball team like SPU and someone that we could easily see again if we can continue to play well this season,” added Speed. “SPU over the years has really had our number and it felt good to finally get a win against them.”
Chris Johnson scored four his 10 points in a 9-0 run that extended a one-point ‘Lope lead into a 26-17 advantage with three minutes left in the first half.
After opening a 12-point lead three minutes into the second half, GCU began to miss the mark from the field and saw the Falcons draw to 50-48 with just under four remaining in the game.
After a pair of free throws from
Nick Witherill, Speed would step up and drain a deep three as the shot clock expired, giving Canyon an insurmountable 55-48 lead.
Justin Wesolowski controlled the middle throughout, scoring 12 points on 5-for-7 shooting and adding nine rebounds. He has now pulled down 23 boards in his last two games.
“I’m pleased that we held our composure and we played very aggressive,” said head coach Russ Pennell. “When they hit us with a run we didn’t wilt and made the necessary plays to stay out in front. Like good teams need to do, we made our free throws down the stretch.”
GCU would make 17-of-21 free throws in the second half.
The ‘Lopes improved to 2-1 with the win, while Seattle Pacific fell to 4-1. SPU earlier this season had defeated No. 3 BYU-Hawai’i and knocked of the University of Arizona in an exhibition game in Tucson.
Grand Canyon will next be in action when they face Fort Lewis at 7:15 p.m. tomorrow at GCU Arena. Fort Lewis was a NCAA tourney team a year ago, earning a No. 2 seed in the Central Region.
“When you play on back-to-back nights it’s kind of a no-win situation,” said Pennell. “If you happen to lose the first game you tend to be a little bit down, and if you win you have the tendency to think it was a bit easier than it was. I told them tomorrow night’s key will be our maturity level. The guys were saying the right things in the locker room and I fully expect with our leadership that we will put together a good performance tomorrow night.”
