The Grand Canyon University men's basketball team dropped their season opener tonight 83-66 to UNLV at the Thomas and Mack Center in Las Vegas, Nev.
After watching the lead change five times in the game’s opening three minutes, UNLV would use a 16-6 run to open a 25-14 lead with 9:21 remaining in the first half.
From there the Antelopes showed the Thomas and Mack Center crowd of 13,763 that they were in the game for the long haul. Kyle Speed and Blake Davis would hit back-to-back three’s to bring the ‘Lopes within two with 5:12 left in the first half. Barret Robbins’ turnaround jumper gave GCU a 38-37 lead with 41 seconds left, before Mike Mosher’s jumper sent the Rebels into the locker rooms with a 39-38 lead. Mosher would finish the game with 16 points and 20 rebounds.
The Antelopes (0-1) outscored UNLV 24-14 in the final nine minutes of the first half, shooting 48.1 (13-for-27) from the floor and 50% from behind the arc (5-for-10).
GCU came out in the second half and threatened to regain the lead, missing a trio of three-pointers in the opening 90 seconds.
UNLV (1-0) took advantage of the cold start and quickly opened up a seven point lead, not allowing GCU within four points the remainder of the half. The Rebels outscored GCU 44-28 in the second half on 51.6% shooting.
“I thought we played hard and competed tonight,” said head coach Russ Pennell. “I don’t think we played real smart on the defense end in the second half. We made some mistakes in our schemes and will have to go home and correct these things. That was probably the only thing that disappointed me.”
Braylon Pickrel led the Antelopes with a career-best 19 points on 9-for-11 shooting and four rebounds in 16 minutes. Davis had 13 points, while Brad Carroll added 11.
Grand Canyon was whistled for 24 fouls during the contest, compared to 13 for the Rebels. UNLV held a 43-35 edge on the boards after each squad registered 20 in the first half.
GCU returns to Phoenix for their 2011-12 home opener on Nov. 16 at 6 p.m. when The Master's College will visit Grand Canyon University Arena.
